Getting to know Jana Townson, Co-Pilot in the Lab at Sawrie Orthodontics

Jana Townson brings so much energetic fun to the patients and staff at Sawrie Orthodontics! Jana started for us on July 25 of last year and is a Registered Dental Assistant with several years of experience. Jana is the Co-Pilot in our Lab, working extensively on retainers. She is in charge of our 3D Printing, ensuring scans are properly completed.

"I love having the 3D Printer with advanced technology for our lab," Jana said.

"This gives us a much faster turnaround and more accurate retainers. We can order specialized appliances from the scans, making sure everything fits precisely," she explained.

By having the 3D Printer, patients have a much more comfortable experience. There are no molds and it's completely painless...plus, it's very quick and incredibly accurate.

In addition to the lab, Jana also helps with adjustments and bandings. "My favorite thing is being able to watch the patients' confidence change as their smile improves. Sometimes people get bullied over their teeth...what we do truly changes their lives. It's so fun to see them blossom like a butterfly. Their confidence improves as their smile improves and we love seeing the amazing end result," Jana exclaimed!

Jana is great with kids and adults alike. She loves her amazing work family and truly admires Dr. Daniel. "He expects a lot of us because he does such great work. He treats us wonderfully and is incredibly genuine. I know he would always be there if we needed anything and treats us like his family," Jana explained.

"I love being able to dress up with my co-workers. We are all friends who really have a great time together at work. We have a lot of fun and I am looking forward to the Back-to-School Bash on Signal Mountain again this year," Jana said.

Jana and her husband, Zack, live in Lookout Valley with their three children: JayLynn is 9, Paysley is 7 and Bowen is 18 months.

We are so happy to have Jana as part of the Sawrie Orthodontics family!!!

As Summertime approaches, we encourage you to get active! Summer in the Chattanooga area is nothing short of amazing and activities are abound! Soak up some fun with your family as you enjoy our gorgeous city and all it has to offer!

Get Outside & Exercise

Pick one outdoor activity - going on a hike, taking a nature walk, playing games such as tag with your kids, or swimming - to shed that cooped up feeling of gym workouts.

Be Good to Your Eyes

Wearing sunglasses when outdoors can block at least 99% of ultraviolet A and B rays. Sunglasses can help prevent cataracts, and also wrinkles around your eyes.

Stay Hydrated

With the heat in the 90's and soaring, it's very easy to get dehydrated. Be sure to drink a lot of water! Also, make sure your kids are doing the same. It's hard to stop them while playing, but they are moving and sweating, so get them to drink up! Popsicles and other frozen treats are a fun way to help stay hydrated.

Wear Sunscreen

Be sure you wear a good sweat and water proof sunscreen that blocks the sun's dangerous rays. Don't forget to re-apply frequently!

Explore Chattanooga

Get out and discover what all Chattanooga has to offer! From Lookouts baseball games, the TN Aquarium, Creative Discovery Museum and the Chattanooga Ducks, to fabulous restaurants and local shopping, there's something for everyone right in your own backyard. Have a stay-cation and enjoy the Scenic City! Looking for more activities, check out ChattanoogaFun.com's list of things to do: https://www.chattanoogafun.com/things-to-do/

Strawberry Salsa

Recipe Courtesy of:
http://cookieandkate/strawberry-salsa-recipe/

This strawberry salsa recipe is delicious, colorful and easy to make! It's the perfect spring or summer party appetizer. Recipe yields enough salsa for about 4 to 6 snacking portions, although I managed to polish it all off myself in 24 hours!

Ingredients

  • Juice and zest from 1 medium lime
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons of honey or maple syrup
  • Pinch of fine sea salt
  • 1 pint of strawberries, hulled and diced
  • 1 jalapeno pepper, seeded and chopped (use a smaller jalapeno for less heat or leave in some seeds for more heat)
  • 1/2 small red onion, chopped
  • 1/2 cup chopped fresh cilantro
  • Freshly ground black pepper, to taste
  • Chips for serving

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, whisk together the lime juice  and zest, honey and salt. Stir in the strawberries, jalapeno, onion and cilantro. Add pepper, to taste, and mix well. Adjust the seasonings if need be (you might like a little more lime for acidity, honey for sweetness or salt if it's just not quite right yet).
  2. If your strawberries are nice and juicy, you can serve immediately, with chips. My salsa needed some time to marinate before it was juicy and awesome (about 30 minutes should do it). Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days.

Notes

Recipe minimally adapted, with permission, from "Dishing Up the Dirt" by Andrea Bemis.

Why Buy Organic? Strawberries are at the top of the dirty dozen list and jalapenos are also of concern. Citrus zest can be contaminated with pesticides so I always try to use organic citrus when zest is involved.

Make it Vegan: Use maple syrup instead of honey.

Andrea's Tip: "When chopping fresh herbs like cilantro, dill and parsley, there's no need to separate the leaves from the tender stems - chop everything! The stems offer a lot of flavor and texture. If the herb has a woody stem, like rosemary or thyme, gently remove the leaves before chopping."

Orthodontic Myth Busters

MYTH:

Your braces won't allow you to play a musical instrument.

FACT:

If you love playing a musical instrument (especially a wind instrument!), that does not have to change when you get braces. You may have a small adjustment period at first, but you will be able to practice and perform while you're getting a beautiful smile!
