Welcome !

February is National Children's Dental Health Month, a time when dental professionals across the nation focus on the importance of dental health for children.

In spite of the advances in modern dentistry, tooth decay in children remains a significant public health issue. Good oral hygiene habits and attitudes at an early age are critical in maintaining good oral health throughout life.

A NOTE FROM DR. DREW...
Recently, there have been stories in the local and national press about changes in fluoride recommendations, particularly in what is termed fluoridation of our public water supplies.  We wanted to provide some information and references for you.

The department of Health and Human Services along with the EPA announced a change in the recommended levels of fluoride in public water supplies.  The two agencies said this is part of “their ongoing support of fluoridation for community water systems and it’s effectiveness in preventing tooth decay throughout one’s lifetime”.  They continued that this is a “continued affirmation of fluoridation as a public health advance, and a way of updating recommendations based on the best available science”.  The change was made to go from a range to just a simple maximum amount.

Previously, water suppliers were directed to have fluoride levels between 0.7 to 1.2 ppm, depending on the region of the country.  The new recommendations state that the maximum needed for beneficial effects is 0.7 ppm.  The reason is our society has changed in the way foods are consumed and where products are manufactured.  Thus, our exposure to fluoride is more broad and diverse.  So, lower fluoride levels can be utilized in our water systems while still maintaining its protective advantages.
Also, for those children who may not have access to fluoridated water some changes have been recommended in the supplements we provide.   Supplements can still be beneficial but current science shows us better ways to utilize these “tooth vitamins”.
