With fall here and winter not far behind, there’s excitement in the air for sweater weather, scarves, color changing leaves, everything pumpkin, snow sports, and holiday cheer.

But beware!

Along with these great things comes the dreaded flu season: drippy noses, tissues everywhere, sneezing, sniffling, coughing, fevers, etc. If you do not protect yourself, the flu can stop you in your tracks, causing you to miss out on the wonders of fall and winter.

The physicians at Palos Verdes Medical Group recommend that most patients ages 3 and older get a flu shot. If you are unsure as to whether or not you should get the flu shot this year, please consult with your physician. Flu shots will be available by appointment every Friday in October from 2 pm - 4 pm and every Saturday in October from 8 am - 1 pm. You can also get your flu shot when you come in for your regularly scheduled physical!

  WHAT IS THE FLU?

The flu is a contagious respiratory illness that is caused by the influenza virus. The severity of the illness can range from mild to severe, depending on the infected individual. Young children, older people, and people with other illnesses are at greatest risk because they have weaker immune systems. The best way to prevent it is by getting vaccinated every year.

WHAT IS THE
SEASONAL FLU SHOT?

The flu shot is a vaccine available every year that lowers your chances of getting the seasonal flu. Even if you received a flu shot in previous years, it is important to get the current shot because it is made to provide protection against the most common flu viruses for that year.

PEAK FLU
SEASON

Most seasonal flu activity typically occurs between October and May. Flu activity most commonly peaks in the United States between December and February. You want to make sure you get your flu shot prior to the peak of flu season, however keep in mind that the earlier you get it, the better!
