With fall here and winter on the way, there’s excitement in the air for sweater weather, scarves, color changing leaves, everything pumpkin, snow sports, and holiday cheer.

But beware! Along with these great things comes the dreaded flu season: drippy noses, tissues everywhere, sneezing, sniffling, coughing, fevers, etc. If you do not protect yourself, the flu can stop you in your tracks, causing you to miss out on the wonders of fall and winter.

The physicians at Palos Verdes Medical Group recommend that most patients ages 6 months and older get a flu shot. If you are unsure as to whether or not you should get the flu shot this year, please consult with your physician. The CDC's Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices has recommended that FluMist, the nasal spray influenza vaccine, should not be used during the upcoming 2016-2017 flu season due to its low ability to prevent flu illness. Because of this, PVMG will not be carrying FluMist this year. The regular flu vaccine is available at our office.

Flu shots will be available by appointment on the following Fridays from 2 to 4 pm: September 30th, October 7th, October 14th, and October 21st and on the following

Saturdays from 9 am to 1 pm: October 1st, October 8th, October 15th, and October 22nd. You can also get your flu shot during your regularly scheduled appointment.

  WHAT IS THE FLU?

The flu is a contagious respiratory illness that is caused by the influenza virus. The severity of the illness can range from mild to severe, depending on the infected individual. Young children, older people, and people with other illnesses are at greatest risk because they have weaker immune systems. The best way to prevent it is by getting vaccinated every year.

WHAT IS THE
SEASONAL FLU SHOT?

The flu shot is a vaccine available every year that lowers your chances of getting the seasonal flu. Even if you received a flu shot in previous years, it is important to get the current shot because it is made to provide protection against the most common flu viruses for that year.
