People with diabetes are at higher risk of developing eye complications compared to people without diabetes. Most eye complications can be easily treated and managed with regular eye check-ups.
 
Glaucoma
Diabetics are 40% more likely to develop glaucoma compared to non-diabetics. The risk of glaucoma increases with age and length of diagnosis.

Cataracts
Diabetics are 60% more likely to develop cataracts compared to non-diabetics. Diabetics are also more likely to develop cataracts at a younger age and have ti develop at a faster rate compared to non-diabetics.
 
Ways to avoid eye complications
  • Annual dilated eye exam
  • Blood sugar control
  • Bring high blood pressure down
  • Quit smoking
  • Be aware of symptoms
    • blurry, double vision and seeing spots
    • difficulty reading signs or books
    • pain, pressure and redness in eyes
    • decreased peripheral vision
