Hi ,

Vaping

Electronic Nicotine Delivery Systems (ENDS) have become more popular with adolescents in recent years. These products include e-cigarettes and vaping devices. Each device has flavored nicotine that is heated and aerosolized, able to be inhaled. Devices can vary in appearance, resembling a cigarette, pen, or USB flash-drive. One of the more popular vaping devices in the adolescent population is the JUUL device, which is shaped like a USB flash-drive and comes with different flavored nicotine pods. These pods come in various flavors such as: fruit, candies, desserts, coffee, and other food flavorings. Some nicotine pods contain extremely high amounts of nicotine. For instance, one JUUL pod contains more than twice the amount of nicotine that is in one cigarette. These pods can be bought online where the purchasing age is 18, but many sites do not require proof of ID.

Many see using these devices as a safer alternative to cigarettes, however, there are no studies that examine the long-term health effects as they are new products. We do know that some of these vaping solutions contain potentially harmful chemicals such as diethylene glycol, and nitrosamines. Nicotine itself has been shown to be highly addictive and harmful to the developing adolescent brain. There have also been case reports of acute nicotine toxicity from nicotine pods spilling onto one’s skin causing sweating, dizziness, vomiting, and increased heart rate. Studies have shown that teenagers who use these devices also have an increased risk of moving on to cigarette smoking. A Surgeons General report from 2016 concluded that second-hand inhalation of these products is also dangerous to one’s health.

What is the thing you enjoy the most about your job?: I love that PPP has made my life better. When I became an RN I wanted to be a mother/baby nurse to be part of someone's story...I did that for a while, and now working at PPP I get to continue that story as their child grows. Plus, many of my patients from the hospital come here and I get to see their children and their family grow. So it's just an extended part of their story.
