Sports Drinks and Tooth Decay

Hydration and energy are important facets to athletic success. But new studies have shown that they can be just as harmful to the strength of your teeth as soft drinks. Due to their acidic nature and high in sugar contents, all these drinks can wear away the enamel from your teeth.

The Academy of General Dentistry released findings in 2005 that showed that over the course of years, sports drinks and energy drinks caused tooth decay just as fast (and in some cases faster) than soft drinks. Many young athletes suppose that as they exercise and play sports, these drinks are vital to their performance and health. While they do assist in endurance and hydration, especially for athletes engaging in strenuous physical activity, you can often get the same benefits from juice or even water with fewer risks to your teeth and your overall health.

Certainly during this hot summer season, a cooling sports drink should not be seen as a healthier alternative to soda when it comes to dental health. If you or your children find sports drinks as a frequent hydrator, you may want to rethink your sugar intake.

Additionally, the USDA has updated its Food Pyramid and makes way for the new food plate, called My Plate.  My Plate emphasizes several important nutrition messages:  eat smaller portions, make at least half the plate fruit and vegetables, and avoid sugary drinks.  Find out more information about good eating & drinking habits here.

EMPLOYEE SPOTLIGHT

This month we are spotlighting Penny Huff.  Penny joined our team in 2005.  When not in the office, Penny enjoys spending time with her husband Mike and their daughters, Paige and Mekenzie.  She is a leader with Valley Grove Baptist Church's Youth Ministry.  She loves to read, take long walks with her dog Marley and traveling.  She is looking forward to a trip this fall to the Grand Canyon!

CONGRATULATIONS!

Our contest for July was to register for a chance to win a backpack filled with school supplies!  We chose a boy and a girl and the winners were Anna M. and Haysen H.  Congratulations to them both!

This month is a drawing to win a limo ride to school!  How fun would it be to load up your friends and travel in style to school?!  This is always an exciting contest for our patients and us.

August 24th is our theme day to show us your school colors!  Show your favorite school some love by wearing your favorite hat or t-shirt and join in on the fun with us!

THANK YOU!

We would like to give a special thanks to all of our patients who participated in our art contest.  We are proud to say that we have some very talented patients!  It will be a difficult task, but we will choose a winner and announce them in next month's newsletter, along with their artwork!  Again, thank you so much for taking time out to bring us your artwork.

Have a great day!
