   Greetings, !

In this issue:

The Columbus Dispatch had a wonderful section this weekend dedicated to the local Professional community treating Sleep Disorders:

"(dental appliances are in some cases emerging as an alternative treatment for sleep apnea)."
Even as Dr Firouzian has been  identifying sleep disorders in the children amongst our patient base:
" And the sleep-program staff at Nationwide Children’s Hospital has easily doubled in the past decade, said Ed Buggie, the hospital’s program manager for neurosciences. There’s a lot of work being done with autism and sleep,” Buggie said. “There’s some belief that there’s an increased abnormality in sleep in kids with autism.”"

Experts give advice for those having trouble falling asleephttp://www.dispatch.com/content/stories/local/

Dr. John Eickholt and Dr. James Fulop (Ohio Health Sleep Physicians) were both quoted for this recent article.

.“I think one of the biggest problems people have is that their mind races,” said Dr. John Eickholt, a sleep expert with Mid-Ohio Sleep Services and OhioHealth Sleep Services.  Everyone from the occasionally sleep-deprived to those with more-severe problems can benefit from what Eickholt and others call good “sleep hygiene.”

White-noise machines are wonderful, said Dr. James Fulop, medical director of OhioHealth Sleep Services.

He’s also a fan of recordings designed to soothe listeners to sleep or guide them through meditation.

Fulop said the television “was not invented to put you to sleep. Millions of dollars are spent in advertising to catch your attention.”

A strenuous workout right before bedtime isn’t ideal for most people. But exercise during the day is one of the best ways to ensure a deep sleep at night, Fulop said. “Good, intense exercise will induce a deeper sleep. Not only will you be more refreshed (the next morning), but more satisfied because you don’t have all these little awakenings.”

Thanks to both doctors for their confidence in the dental device we offer for our patients who can benefit from this treatment.  We value their referrals and hope to honor their trust with care of their patients.

Types of sleep apnea
There are three types of sleep apnea: obstructive, central, and mixed.

Who has Sleep Apnea?
Sleep Apnea is very common.  One out of four adults has sleep apnea and the odds get higher as you get older.  Forty percent of snorers have sleep apnea. Risk factors include males, overweight, diabetics, and high blood pressure.

What happens if it is untreated?
Sleep Apnea can cause high blood pressure and other cardiovascular diseases, stroke, acid reflux, weight gain, impotency, memory problems, and headaches. The average life of an untreated apneic is about 55 years if they have had it all their life, but once they get past that hurdle, they are safe from death, but not from misery. Comorbidity issues cannot be reversed and quality of life can diminish just as you begin your retirement period of life.  The most important message to pass along to our patients is that unlike many other disorders, once this is controlled, your health can improve immensely.

FDA Dental devices are all Dr. Firouzian delivers to his patients as they must last the test of time for his patients.

Have a great day!
