Teach Your Children (Oral Hygiene) Well

Everyone wants their children to have have healthy teeth that last a lifetime. But oral hygiene begins even before teeth enter the picture -- or the mouth.

Smile-More wants your kids to smile more now -- and in the years to come. Here are some guidelines for parents to help their children establish good dental health early in life.

  • Add fluoride: Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral found in many foods and also in drinking water in more than half the many cities and towns in the United States. Fluoride benefits teeth by strengthening tooth enamel and making it more resistant to decay-causing acid attacks. It also reduces the ability of plaque bacteria to produce acid. Go to cdc.gov to determine whether or not your water has fluoride in it and if not, ask your dentist if you should get a prescription for fluoride drops or chewable tablets for your child.
  • Feed your baby healthy food: Choose drinks and foods without a lot of sugar in them, and provide your child fruits and vegetables instead of sweets. Be aware that dried fruits such as raisins, can easily stick to the grooves of teeth and can cause cavities if not thoroughly brushed off.

  • Prevent tooth decay: Never put your baby to bed with a bottle at night or at naptime. (If you do put your baby to bed with a bottle, fill it only with water). Milk, formula, juices and other sweet drinks, such as soda, all contain sugar, and sucking bottles filled with sugary liquids cause tooth decay. During the day, avoid giving your baby a bottle filled with sweet drinks, and if your baby uses a pacifier, do not dip it in anything sweet (such as sugar or honey).

Smile-More Office Happenings-June

In the month of May we wished our hygienist, Mary Ann, a very happy birthday and this month a happy anniversary as she celebrates 29 years working with Dr. Erickson.  Also celebrating 29 years with Dr Erickson is our business manager, Donna.  We're all trying to catch up to Carol but can't quite get there!!

Sending out a big congrats and best wishes to Alison's daughter, Melissa and her new husband Josh.  We all enjoyed their wedding celebration on June 4th.

Also in May many of us attended continuing education courses at the annual CSDA convention at Mohegan Sun Casino.  Here is a tidbit from the course that Denise A took about Mental Detox.

"85% of our daily thoughts are negative.  Our immune system hears all of our thoughts.  Start to become aware of what you are grateful for.  Gratitude is not only the greatest of virtues but the parent of all others.  If you are not happy with what you have, you will never be happy with what you want."

Something to think about.  Thanks for sharing Denise.
