Celebrating Black History
Poindexter Dental Inc. is a dwelling for pioneers in the African American community. Dental Assistant Charita Compton is among them. Compton came to the dental practice in 1977, the year she became the first African American to complete the dental assistant program at the University of Texas School of Dentistry-Houston. Compton grew up in Houston and attended Jack Yates High School. She decided at an early age to pursue dentistry, influenced by her cousin who was a dental assistant. The young pioneer was in good company at Poindexter Dental, since the founder, Dr. Zeb F. Poindexter, Jr., was the first African American to complete the doctoral program at the University of Texas School of Dentistry-Houston. He established his practice in Sunnyside in 1956. Back then, it was known as Chocolate Bayou. Compton loves her chosen profession, which is evident by her 46-year career, entirely at Poindexter Dental. In 2000, she worked with Dr. Zeb F. Poindexter, III who took over when his father retired. They have continued the legacy in the same location, 7703 Cullen Blvd. Over the years, Compton has remained steadfast as a dental assistant with the additional role of clinical assistant manager. She’s developed many relationships over the decades with patients and staff. And she is the familiar face that many have come to appreciate... generation after generation. Congratulations Charita Compton for making a mark in Black History.
