A New Way To Afford Dental Care! Our office is pleased to offer uninsured patients the "Carosello Dentistry Dental Plan" - a new way to make dental treatments affordable. Here's how it works: Any patient, as well as their spouse and dependent children under the age of 19 are eligible, as well as full-time students up to age 23. The annual cost is $250 for the new patient member, plus just $125 for each additional family member. This includes a simple dental cleaning for each participant every six months, along with regular exams and x-rays. There are no deductibles and no yearly maximums! If additional dental services are needed, they will be provided to you at a reduced fee. Patients who have enrolled in this plan have shared many positive comments with us. All the details of the dental plan aren't listed in this newsletter, due to space constraints. There are some guidelines/exclusions. If you are interested in learning more, please call our office. We'll be happy to speak with you about this exciting plan, or send you a brochure with more details! Are You Doing All You Can To Prevent Oral Cancer? It is my sincere belief that a simple visual exam by the dentist is no longer sufficient to screen for oral cancer. Let me tell you why. I have been using both the VELscope and ViziLite® Plus in my office to detect abnormal lesions in the mouth, and I find them to be extremely valuable tools. VELscope® and ViziLite® Plus both have the same end goal of detecting abnormal oral tissue, but they use slightly different methods. The Velscope® is a painless, non-invasive instrument that works by emitting a blue light into the mouth. Healthy tissues glows a green color, but abnormal areas appear dark. With the ViziLite® Plus, a light passes over mouth tissue that has been treated with a special rinse solution. Normal tissue will appear dark, but abnormal tissue will appear white. Once these suspicious areas are identified, the dentist determines what the appropriate next steps should be. Some insurance companies are beginning to realize the value of adding one of these exams to traditional visual oral cancer screenings and are choosing to cover the service. However, you are correct when you say some insurance companies don’t pay for this valuable tool. We have uncovered a number of abnormal lesions through these exams, so the professionals in our office are very serious about offering this option to patients. In fact, we have worked very hard to make it affordable. We currently offer VELscope® or ViziLite® Plus for only $30. This price allows a patient TWO examinations per year. Oral cancer kills approximately one person per hour in the United States. Early detection is key and we are gratified to be able to offer this extra screening tool to our patients. Please consider this exam the next time you are in our office.
The "Acid Test" - Protect Your Teeth Acids found in food and liquids can have a harmful affect on your teeth. Each tooth has a hard protective layer called the enamel. When acids come in contact with the enamel, the acids can make it soft. When this happens repeatedly, your enamel can wear away and can never be restored naturally. The chance of getting cavities increases for those whose teeth are regularly exposed to food with high acid contents. It is impossible to make a complete list, as acidic foods are found everywhere, but following are some of the more common acidic food and beverages: Beer, Beef, Soft drinks, Coffee, Fish, Lamb, Pasta, White Flour, Table Salt, Pork and White Bread. Even grazing on fruits and vegetables slowly throughout the day can expose your teeth to acid damage.
Have a great day! Stephen T. Carosello, DDS
