A Personal Note from Dr. Nichols

Happy November, !

Last week, my friends, family, and NicholsMD staff joined me to celebrate the 2016 Gala for Greenwich Hospital's Patron Party. I’m so excited to be co-chairing this event, and hope to see you Saturday at the Gala! (To purchase tickets, click here!)

Our staff has been busy outside of the office this fall. Over the weekend, Katie, M.S, PA-C, our board-certified cosmetic and medical dermatology provider, moved to a new apartment in Stamford. As a Chicago-native, Katie is thrilled to call Connecticut her new home! And Emily, our office manager, just returned from New Orleans, where she attended the American Society of Dermatologic Services (ASDS) conference. She brought back some exciting new ideas, so that NicholsMD can continually provide YOU with the latest and greatest in advanced aesthetic procedures.

Ask the Aesthetician

With cooler temperatures upon us, many people start to notice the effects of colder weather on their skin. The most common question I get this time of year is:

Q: What causes dry skin?

A: Dry skin is caused by water escaping from the surface layers of the skin. The skin will suffer from dryness, flaking, tightness, itching, and sometimes stinging and burning. Fine lines and wrinkles look worse when the skin is dehydrated. Be sure to hydrate every day and switch to a heavier moisturizer at night in cooler weather. Look for products that contain hyaluronic acid which will work to bind water in the skin layers, preventing moisturize from wicking away. My favorite is SkinCeuticals B5 Hydrating Gel which is perfect for all skin types.

How Thanksgiving Food Affects Your Skin

With the Thanksgiving holiday around the corner, let’s confront the way food (and holiday feasts) affect our skin.

The GOOD and DELICIOUS:

BERRIES

Strawberries are a skin favorite, but blueberries and raspberries are also top choices because of their richness in antioxidants. With more Vitamin C than oranges, berries fight the free radicals that damage cells, break down collagen, and cause fine lines and wrinkles.

LOW FAT DAIRY PRODUCTS

Vitamin A, found in dairy products, is essential for the cellular turnover of healthy skin.

ESSENTIAL OILS

It’s true. Extra-virgin olive oil keeps the skin hydrated and smooth, which results in the skin appearing bright.

PUMPKIN

The actual orange hue of pumpkins is from carotenoids, a wrinkle-fighting pigment from a plant that helps neutralize free radicals in the skin. Pumpkin is also filled with powerful antioxidants, vitamins C, vitamin E, and vitamin A.

THE UGLY OF FOOD ON YOUR SKIN:

SUGAR

It’s no surprise that sugar is not optimal for your body and organs. Sugar affects your skin because it damages your collagen, and results in wrinkles over-time. Since sugar breaks down your skin’s elasticity, your skin will appear to sag.

SALT

A high salt intake leads to a puffy face. It also triggers inflammation that sometimes leads to acne and redness.

ALCOHOL

I don’t want to burst your champagne bubble, but alcohol damages the liver because it is a toxin to human body, and dehydrates our skin. Thus, alcohol may cause your skin to exhibit enlarged pores, overall dryness, and some redness.

THE TAKEAWAY:

Sugars, salts, and alcohols are not easy to avoid 100% of time, especially during a time full of holiday cheer. This article is a reminder to eat such foods with moderation to celebrate this holiday season with clear, glow-y skin.

And, from all of us at the Boutique, we wish you and your family a Happy Thanksgiving!
