Great experience at Ames eye clinic. I recently moved to the area from Ankeny and needed to find a new physician. Ames eye clinic got me in right away, no long waiting room, friendly staff, clean office, and most of all they are having my contacts shipped directly to my house so I don't have to go back and pick them up!!

My appointments are always very organized and the staff is courteous. Their on-line presence is great because they definitely don't let you forget your appointment, with NUMEROUS e-mails starting a month before up to the exact week and day. The doctors always make you feel important and take plenty of time to discuss things with you and ask questions.

I chose AEC after doing minimal Internet research (they accepted my vision insurance) and had low expectations as I knew nothing about it. The age of the building was a bit concerning as I hoped that the technologies inside weren't as old. I was very impressed by all aspects of my visit. From the front desk, to the doctor's assist, to the doctor and the contact and glasses specialists everyone was professional and curteous and bery good at what they do. I will be back.

More thorough exam than others I've had, and with fancier equipment. Ames Eye Clinic has a machine to test your peripheral vision, a couple that take measurements, and a camera that takes ultra high-resolution photos of the structures within your eyes. The photos cost $39 extra; I don't recall whether that was after insurance or if VSP just didn't cover it. They did not dye or dilate my eyes because apparently the hi-res photos make that unnecessary.

I really like the machine that measure eye health without having to dilate. Dr. Kruger is a true professional and explained things we should watch in the future as we reviewed the photo results together. The staff was very friendly and helpful. I feel confident the health of my eyes and vision are in great hands with Dr. Kruger and all the professionals at the Ames and Des Moines locations. Having been with Dr. John Kruger for those many years, I was a little apprehensive in making the transition to a new doctor. Two things: I did not feel that one of the receptionists was as friendly as she could have been. I also was not made aware that the dye that was put in my eyes could possibly turn my contacts yellow! I drove home intending to run errands and looked in car mirror to see that I had neon green eyes! I was shocked, and called your office to find out that it does occur sometimes. It would have been helpful to know. Thanks so much!

All was great except having my retina scanned, then later in the examining chair being handed a flyer explaining that I could have that scan viewed by the doctor for an extra $39. The other (free) option was to use drops to dilate my pupils - but it really wasn't an option because I didn't know I'd be needing to arrange for a driver, and I needed to go back to work anyway which wouldn't be possible with my eyes dilated. It just seemed all so inappropriate, like I had been led into a trap. So I took my third option which was to do neither - the tech said no, I have to do one or the other, but of course I do not have to do anything, which I explained. She was very polite, no knock against her at all. But that particular protocol at the clinic just felt offensive and manipulative. In contrast, they cheerfully agreed to replace 2 (expensive) new pairs of progressive focusing glasses with lined tri-focals after I found I couldn't get used to the former. I'm very impressed by that. Thanks!

I drove out of my way to find a professional eye clinic, I'm very sad to say I should have save my time, fuel and loss of work and just went to Walmart. I would have been happy and actually had new eyewear. Sure I was late five minutes and I forgave the instant lack of greeting as I approched the counter, sideways glances between employees when I said my name. By all means my appointment had been made over a month prior I work and live 45+miles alway and was leaving my job at a school just prior to the end of the day to arrive at 4:00 Why are the paperwork required when it is not discussed??? I clearly marked I had worn contacts prior 7 days a week (that day had on glasses). Exam went as expected. Eye doctor took his time when I had a concern No mention of paperwork just said looked healthy. Time for new glasses, I was informed my insurance would not cover the glasses portion only the exam. I was kind enough and said its five before we start are you waiting to close. "No we close at 5:30" was the response I got. After hearing that Insurance would not cover the glasses I asked, okay so what about we just get the contacts today and wait on glasses when we have more time. This got me a blank silent face and then an answer that I'm still pondering. I was told that she did not know I wanted contacts and a contact exam was not performed, to do this another appointment would need to be scheduled and it would not be covered by my insurance. The exam would be a hundred and some and then I would need a contact fitting which would be another 80 dollars. By this point I was not happy. We then preceded to look at some 99$ range glasses because I guess of the type of insurance I carry she assumed I was not or could not pay more, not knowing why I have the reasoning why I have this insurance she assumed incorrectly. She showed me some very unstylish frames and by 5:15 I was told she hated to say this but maybe I should take my new percription and look and other locations, she would like me to settle on something I was unsure about. I got my percription, receipt and left mad and angry. $296.00 for an exam and one eye drop in each eye and this does not include a contact exam!!!! I have worn contacts for 17 years and not once had to pay for two exams or a fitting. As you can tell two days later I'm still mad! I now need to take more time off work to find another eye care professional to do another exam for my contacts and still pay for that exam the glasses and contacts. Buch of Bologna, if she just wanted to leave work on time then don't schedule that close to closing and do your job. Sorry I can't not do mine and short change our kids of tomorrow. So do yours.

I did know it wouldn't pay for my contact eval. While very thorough and staff so very friendly I may reconsider going back.

This was the best optometry exam I have ever had! I learned more about my eye health and loved seeing the images of my eye along with a thorough explanation of it. Optical services were above and beyond anything I've been offered before. I would highly recommend the Ames Eye Clinc!

Appointment was scheduled for 2:00. I checked in 15 minutes prior at 1:45. I waited until shortly after 2:30 for the appointment to begin. My routine appointment was not finished until 3:45. Yes, 1 hour 45 minutes for a routine eye exam. There was also plenty of waiting time after the appointment began. Waited 15 minutes for the doctor to come back to the room after dilating my eyes. I'm sure the services themselves were fine, but the entire operation and logistics of the appointment were awful.

The only feedback I would have is with regards to the information I was suppose to bring to my appointment. I was told over the phone that I wouldn't need to have a hard copy of my prescription information and as long as I knew my contact prescription and contact type I would be fine. When I arrived I was told that wasn't the case and that I needed to have a hard copy.

The gal who greeted me was happy to see me, she was very rote in her style. She is also the one who did the initial exams and tests and was not at all friendly--just rote--I felt like I was in a machine! Made me want to change doctors. My doctor was fine and did a good job. There was an expectation that I would purchase my eyewear there and I have never done that since going to this office. Too expensive.

The time management was aweful. My appointment was at 1:30 and I didn't leave until 3:30. I had to get my eyes dilated and I waited almost an hour for the doctor to come back in to finish the exam. Sitting the the exam room for an extra hour when it only takes maybe 15 minutes for eyes to dilate was a little ridiculous. The staff should pay more attention to how long patients are waiting. I was seriously thinking about getting up and leaving.

I was having a hard time focusing my right contact. And instead of them telling me to wait for the new pair to get in and see if it fixes itself they took the time to examine my eye very closely with the contact in and noticed the weight of the contact needed to be shifted 10° to one side. Fixed my vision right up!

Dr.Kruger and the staff of the Ames Eye Clinic made my experience very pleasant. I also appreciated the new technology of the instrument that took a picture of the inside of my eye! That way I did not have to get my eyes dilated. It was well worth the extra $39!

It was mostly fine. I feel like the exam was thorough, very competent, and that I came away understanding the best option for my vision. The only uneasiness, or vague feeling of being manipulated happened when a new machine was used to examine the retina - the alternative is pupil dilation, which would have prevented me from driving home, and necessitated another appointment. So the new machine was used as part of the initial battery of procedures before seeing the doctor. It was only later I learned I must decide whether to pay $40 extra to have the doctor use these images for the exam, or go the pupil dilation/2nd appointment route. Getting surprised like this with the need to make a quick decision was kind of offensive and deflating. I suggest this choice be explained by email before the office visit to allow time to think and to make arrangements for a ride home if needed. (I hope there is no charge for the 2nd visit, which would be borderline unethical.) Otherwise, all was ok.

Also at check out some administrative questions came up that should be clear for the front office to take care of to make the transaction easier. I can see if someone was in a rush would not be happy with the checkout transaction. Luckily i had ample time that day and was not concerned. But overall your office was great to work with. The text messages and calls for appointments are helpful. I felt comfortable with everyone. I liked that there was not pressure to buy product. I felt a thorough examination was performed and help me understand my eye health completely. I will tell others about my positive experience and will continue to be a customer in the future. I guess it is my own fault, but after telling me my insurance covered my exam, contacts, and everything, I found out that was only partially true. I was only expecting to pay a small co-pay but ended up having to pay more. I should have known what my insurance would cover, but after they looked it up for me and told me everything was covered I thought that meant I wouldn't have to pay much out of pocket. I would like to have a better idea of what things would cost before actually having my appointment.

I can not remember a time I have ever felt so terrible after leaving a clinic. They charge a contact lens fitting fee AND a contact lens testing fee. With insurance my minimum charge was going to be $170, before getting glasses or contacts! I left and didn't get the lens fitting since that was going to be a $90 charge, I am going to return to McFarland Eye Clinic and still save money even though they don't take my insurance. WORST EXPERIENCE EVER!!!

I do not see any necessity for change. The doctor was very thorough in his analysis and explanations and made sure I understood the issues. All assistants were friendly as well as the front office ladies.

The services were very good. I was disappointed with the price for an eye exam. I didn't call ahead to find out and paid $150 more for the same service I received at a different eye care center previously. Without vision insurance, I'm not sure I'll be able to return due to the high costs.

The staff really needs to work on being friendly. I felt as though I was getting the cold shoulder by the lady that was with me before the doctor came in and I felt as though she thought that any other place would have been better than being in a room with me. I felt like another number to you, not like a valued patient. If I were to stay in Ames, I would not return to your office as I would try to find somewhere friendlier.

If there are payment options they should be suggested. I walked out needing glasses and contacts and my glasses alone even with insurance would be upwards of $400. I walked out purchasing NOTHING! When I suggested I was price shopping I was told you would price match contacts, but no "payment plan" possibilities were even broached.

I was a few minutes late for my appointment, but I probably didn't even wait a full minute to get in. There was no wasted time, I went from one test to the next, and the doctor came in immediately when the assistant was finished. Altogether, my appointment lasted about 30 minutes.

I can't think of anything I would change. Due to an unexpected meeting, I was actually late for my appointment, which I had scheduled just earlier that afternoon. When I arrived to apologize for being late and to see if there was another time the next day, the staff ushered me in, said I could still be seen, and made me feel very special.

love the doctor, closest prescription i have had, and thorough checkup. The staff and technology is lacking. i thought i would use my smart phone to make an appointment but all i ended up doing is a lot of emailing and waiting hours and even to the next day for a response just to find i needed to request another time. the staff looks unhappy, i felt like i was just an inconvenience in their day. i would like to see a schedule of open appointments and/or a better response to schedule emails.

When I entered your office I was greeted properly but only by one person and she was on the phone, she had a huge smile on her face and even waved. The other gal was just sitting at the desk with her head resting on her hand. She barely moved and didn't smile or even say hi. I then had to tell her I had an appointment, she never asked or said anything. There was another gal, who was my nurse, she came over to the desk and proceeded to get my information. I have never had an issue with your office's customer service before this, they have always been great.
